Word Count Calculator

Count words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and estimate reading time for any text.

About Word Count Calculator

A word count calculator analyzes text and provides detailed statistics including word count, character count (with and without spaces), sentence count, paragraph count, and estimated reading time. Writers, students, editors, and content creators rely on word counts for meeting assignment requirements, staying within platform limits (like Twitter or LinkedIn), optimizing content for SEO, and tracking daily writing productivity.

How to Use

Paste or type your text into the input area. The calculator instantly displays all statistics in real-time as you type or edit. Key metrics shown include total words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs, average word length, average sentence length, and estimated reading time based on an average adult reading speed of 200-250 words per minute.

Formula / Key Equations

Reading time = Total Words / Reading Speed (default: 225 words per minute). Average word length = Total Characters (without spaces) / Total Words. Average sentence length = Total Words / Total Sentences. Character counting includes all characters including punctuation.

Common Use Cases

Students verifying essay length requirements (e.g., 1000-word essays). Bloggers optimizing articles for SEO recommended lengths. Social media managers checking character limits for posts (Twitter: 280 chars, LinkedIn: 3000 chars). Copywriters ensuring content fits design layouts. Freelance writers tracking productivity against word-rate contracts.

Limitations

The reading time estimate is based on average adult reading speed and may vary significantly depending on content complexity, reader familiarity with the topic, and reading purpose (skimming vs. deep reading). The sentence counter detects sentences by period, question mark, and exclamation mark — it may miscount abbreviations like 'Mr.' or 'U.S.' as sentence endings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time is estimated by dividing the total word count by 225 words per minute, which is the average adult reading speed for non-technical English text. Technical or academic content may take longer, while light fiction may be read faster.

Does character count include spaces?

We provide both counts: 'characters with spaces' (total characters including all whitespace) and 'characters without spaces' (letters, numbers, and punctuation only). Different platforms use different counting methods — Twitter counts all characters including spaces.

How many pages is my text?

A standard page with double-spaced 12-point font contains approximately 250 words. Single-spaced, it is about 500 words. However, page count varies with font size, margins, and formatting, so word count is a more reliable metric.

Does this count words in languages other than English?

Yes, the word counter works for most languages that use spaces between words (English, Spanish, French, German, etc.). Languages without spaces between words (Chinese, Japanese, Thai) may not be counted accurately by simple space-based splitting.

Is my text stored or sent anywhere?

No. All text analysis happens entirely in your browser. Your text is never sent to any server and is not stored anywhere. When you close or refresh the page, the text is gone.
