BMI Calculator

Calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI) and understand your weight category with visual charts.

About BMI Calculator

A BMI (Body Mass Index) calculator estimates whether a person is underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese based on their height and weight. BMI is the most widely used screening tool for weight-related health risks and is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and healthcare professionals worldwide. While BMI does not directly measure body fat, it provides a reliable indicator of weight-related health concerns for most adults.

How to Use

Enter your height (in feet/inches or centimeters) and weight (in pounds or kilograms). The calculator instantly computes your BMI and displays where you fall on the BMI scale: Underweight (below 18.5), Normal weight (18.5-24.9), Overweight (25-29.9), or Obese (30+). Visual charts and color-coded categories help you quickly understand your result.

Formula / Key Equations

BMI = weight (kg) / height (m) squared. Using imperial units: BMI = (weight in lbs × 703) / (height in inches) squared. For example, a person weighing 70 kg at 1.75 m height: BMI = 70 / (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9.

Common Use Cases

Routine health checkups and fitness assessments. Doctors screening patients for weight-related health risks. Personal trainers designing fitness programs. Nutritionists planning diet interventions. Health insurance companies setting premium categories. Researchers studying population health trends.

Limitations

BMI does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass — athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI without excess fat. It does not account for age, gender, ethnicity, or body fat distribution. It is not suitable for children (use age- and gender-specific BMI percentiles instead), pregnant women, or elderly individuals who may have lost muscle mass.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a healthy BMI range?

A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal weight according to WHO guidelines. However, optimal BMI may vary slightly based on age, gender, and ethnicity. Some research suggests the healthiest BMI for adults is in the 20-22 range.

Is BMI accurate for muscular people?

BMI can be misleading for athletes and bodybuilders because it cannot distinguish between muscle and fat. A muscular person may be classified as 'overweight' or 'obese' by BMI despite having low body fat. In such cases, body fat percentage measurement is a better indicator.

How often should I check my BMI?

For general health monitoring, checking BMI once every few months is sufficient when combined with other health indicators. BMI changes slowly with consistent diet and exercise, so daily or weekly checks are unnecessary.

Does BMI apply to children?

Standard adult BMI categories do not apply to children and teens (ages 2-20). For young people, BMI is interpreted using age- and gender-specific percentile charts. A child at the 85th-95th percentile is considered overweight.

Can BMI predict health risks?

BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic tool. While a high BMI is associated with increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers, individual health depends on many factors including blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, family history, and physical activity level.
